I feel like I've seen a lot of debating about the ethics of criticism lately, and watching the latest one on Historically Speaking has made me realize that it's probably all about what people would feel comfortable with somebody saying to them rather than general principles of appropriateness. (Duh.) And it seems like people have thoughts all over the map. And it really seems to analogize to fandom very well. So what I'm wondering is:

Historical fashion fandom:

- Would you tell somebody if there was something inaccurate about their historic clothing, or want them to tell you?

- Ditto something inaccurate but easily fixable and how to fix it?

- Ditto lost buttons, pins, things in general that you're pretty are not how the owner intended it to look?

Media fandom:

- Blah blah characterization issues or plotting/pacing/that kind of thing?

- Blah blah canon facts?

- Blah blah typo/punctuation errors, etc.?

comments
