Appendicitis scare!
Jul. 15th, 2023 07:10 pmI had a VERY exciting Friday night. I'd been feeling crappy since Thursday morning, bloated and crampy, but it was weird because my period's not due for another week and it was minus the backache that usually comes with my period pain anyway. Little bit of nausea, not much appetite. I kind of assumed I ate something a bit off and I just needed to wait it out. Woke up in the middle of the night feeling really uncomfortable, tried to lie on my left because that's supposed to get gas out of your system faster - did nothing. Friday was the Annual Fundraiser (formerly Gala) where I was supposed to work, so I didn't have to go in until 2:30 to make my hours fit, and that was nice because I still felt pretty bad. Still thinking it was gas and still not wanting to eat, I decided to walk downtown to work it out of my system and get a boba tea, but partway there I started to feel the pain mainly on the right side and started frantically googling "how to tell gas pains from appendicitis" and suchlike. By the time I started on the way back, I was freaking out.
Planned to go to the local urgent care, but they told me over the phone that they couldn't run tests (they're kind of an outpost) so I had to go to Cooperstown. Spent an hour in the waiting room in some pain, then did an intake interview(?), then sat there for another hour, starting to feel better. By the time they took me back to a bed, I was kind of unsure if I wanted to bother staying, but also still anxious about the prospect of my appendix being in dire straits and exploding. Eventually Mom came to sit with me, which was very nice, and then I had a CT scan. Result: definitely some amount of infection (raised WBC count etc.), not really conclusively appendicitis. Some of the more junior surgeons came to talk to me and I suggested that since I was in less pain than when I came in, I should go home and come back if the pain got worse again, so that's what happened.
I definitely felt better in the night - nothing like Thursday night - and today's it's stayed pretty constant at a low-level soreness. I still have some anxiety that I'll take a sudden turn for the worse and my appendix will rupture before I can get back to Cooperstown, but I don't think it's really likely.
