Moar ruffles. Today I did two short ruffles for below-the-elbow sleeves, with stroked gathers (although technically I don't fuss too much about the stroking, it's the way they're attached to the band that I go with) - they look excellent. I think I'm about ready to start making ones for Etsy, so I ordered a couple of yards of all the fabrics I'd liked from Dharma (lawn, voile, gauze). I need to get out my camera and take pictures of this pair, and upload my Latham photos to FB.

While eating lunch this morning I bit into a grape and accidentally inhaled the juice. DO NOT DO THIS. Oh my god. It still hurts in my lungs.

It's intriguing that when Hulu advertises for Coronation Street (interesting choice, Hulu) they literally only show about 10% of the actors. You'd think the whole show was about the mean dark-haired woman whose name I've never been able to remember.

Walked to the grocery store for peanut butter and choc. chips, then to Mom's, but she wasn't there so by the time I got home I'd walked like an extra 3/4 of a mile.

Just getting to last week's Smash. UGH. From the audience being expected to take a class of srs theater major undergrads as objective critics of a musical comedy's script to Angsty Composer Guy's absolutely ridiculous entitlement (seriously, who thought this was a good storyline? With Karen in the beginning believing she could/should be a star right off the bat it was eyebrowy enough, but this guy is completely getting under my skin. As a member of the generation these characters are supposed to be in, it just seems insulting to focus so much on obvious shoot-to-the-top stuff. It's not escapist, its unsophisticated and uninteresting). At least Derek finally tore a strip off him, but it's not enough given that he thought Karen would actually leave the show for his immature ass. I'm also confused about Ronnie. She's supposed to be a big-time Broadway star, apparently, but during this rehearsal she acts like she's never played a role onstage.

Because whenever I meet anyone, they know who you are! It's amazing!

Julie and I had a good time at the historical fashion show (only now it feels awkward to say because she's here HI JULIE). We met Kjirsten from Clermont, offered to do some volunteering with costuming there, and talked to a woman from Hyde Park (which reminded me of Eleanor, if you remember that fiasco), and as soon as I got back to Melissa's I made up and ordered business cards on Vistaprint. I am feeling very good this evening. Scandal, pajamas, pizza, and Swedish fish - and more fun tomorrow, in my new spencer, with good food at a great (so I hear) restaurant.

got my samples from Dharma )

Finally watching last week's Smash. Can't believe anyone's taking this kid's idea for a musical seriously, it's quite obviously 100% based on his life and his imagined revenge against the world - it's like a 16-year-old's fantasy, so embarrassing.

I can never figure out if Smash really thinks Karen is amazing and perfect or not. Because the thing is, they portray Ivy so sympathetically 95% of the time, but on the other hand it doesn't make a ton of sense to me for a show to go "Actress A has a Special Quality that makes her perfect for the role, and look at all the obstacles in the way! Think about how hard it is to be taken seriously for a job when you have no experience, when you'd be so great at it. Even her parents only tolerate her dream, rather than all-out supporting it. But look at poor Actress B! She's perfect for the role except for her lack of Special Quality (take our word for it if you can't see she lacks it), and she has some real emotional problems. The director's having sex with her (using her) while pushing for A, which makes him terrible - but don't doubt his opinion of A! Root for A! But also root for B! But they can never both be happy." WHAT DO YOU WANT, SHOW???

episode-specific spoiler, not a big one )

I'M SORRY BUT IT'S BACK ON SO I HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT WHILE LOVING IT

It's interesting to read well thought out meta about Glee's issues with coming-out storylines, but I'm forced to admit that my reasons for giving up on it are nowhere near as noble. Though they are twofold. 1) Ever since I started watching Smash, Glee has been less of a priority as my musical-show needs are being filled by something that, even when it's not very good, is still better in nearly all respects. 2) It always kind of niggled at me that the Glee characters' reactions in the theme episodes - the mad love of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney, etc. - never really made sense to me with their ages/generation. Melissa loves the theme episodes, though, and in general is more into the show than I am. It finally struck me when I saw the promo where they're all "disco sucks" that this is because the show is completely aimed at Generation X. The complete disdain for disco is something people who actually remember it have, imo. It was one thing at the beginning where it was a high school show for non-high schoolers, but that's different than "a high school show that panders to a specific set of adults".

Speaking of Smash )

Wish I had something of substance to say about Mad Men )

Smash 1.08: Wow, this scene with Tom and Derek is really fantastic. Just ... oh my god. That is some amazing acting.

Exhibition is going ... trickily. Not only am I sad about the 18th and 19th century costumes we can't use, some really nice 1920s ones didn't work either. (Too small for child mannequins! FTLOG. Skinny Minnies, as my mother would say.) But I think this version of the fashion room will be more accessible and interesting to casual visitors.

My phone is finally working. That is good.

I am cramping something fierce. That is bad.

Melissa got me a borrowed copy of The Hunger Games )

Whoa, I love this show so much. I actually want to go see the musical they're putting on, from just the few bits they've shown. The casting seems just right, Davenport's got that scruffy thing going on that was so hot in Dead Man's Chest, it's genuinely interesting. There's just one problem.

better than Glee in every way imaginable apart from that, though )
