It's interesting to read well thought out meta about Glee's issues with coming-out storylines, but I'm forced to admit that my reasons for giving up on it are nowhere near as noble. Though they are twofold. 1) Ever since I started watching Smash, Glee has been less of a priority as my musical-show needs are being filled by something that, even when it's not very good, is still better in nearly all respects. 2) It always kind of niggled at me that the Glee characters' reactions in the theme episodes - the mad love of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney, etc. - never really made sense to me with their ages/generation. Melissa loves the theme episodes, though, and in general is more into the show than I am. It finally struck me when I saw the promo where they're all "disco sucks" that this is because the show is completely aimed at Generation X. The complete disdain for disco is something people who actually remember it have, imo. It was one thing at the beginning where it was a high school show for non-high schoolers, but that's different than "a high school show that panders to a specific set of adults".

Speaking of Smash, I finally caught up the other day. I kind of agree with Tom and Lorenzo that the relationship drama overwhelms the theatre drama and that it needs to be more about the show. But I find Derek's hallucinations about Marilyn to be hilarious. I'm really not sure what the point is, though - I'm hoping it's something like "Derek is projecting his own stuff onto Karen and that's why he thinks she's a good fit when she doesn't act well and sings like a pop star rather than a Broadway one" but it's probably more straightforward. And/or indicative of a brain tumor. But regardless of that, it's nice to read T&L's recaps and the comment sections and see that yes, everyone thinks Ivy is a better fit and Karen is so doe-eyed and innocent that she actually is bland.

Wish I had something of substance to say about Mad Men, but really my whole reaction to the last episode was to laugh at Pete. It's like, even when he's fifty he's going to still be the fuckup who tries to drum up romances with 17 year olds and gets emasculated at the kitchen sink. And getting beaten up by Lane was the icing on the cake. The cake itself being John Hamm manly-ly taking off his shirt and knowing how to fix the sink.
