This is one of my favorite subjects. You've been warned :D

I ended up writing a very long response to this, so I decided to post it on my own journal rather than crowding yours. Basically, I love what Virginia Woolf wrote, because it shows us so much about how important history is. Also, I think there's danger in going too far the other way, claiming there was almost no oppression.
