chocolatepotToday I worked on "I am Now in my Turkish Habit": Orientalism in Eighteenth Century Women's Dress and have gotten quite a bit done! Covered so far: specific quotes from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's letters on clothing and a few portraits in Turkish costume. That doesn't seem like very much right now, but I think it's a good setup for tomorrow (although providing my shoulder feels better then, I hope to make my Kindle sleeve).
Still entertained with Miss Betsy Thoughtless. It's one of those "people are all the same" things - Betsy is 14, first there's this relationship drama because she flirts with a guy and he thinks she wants to have sex but she is not that kind of girl. Then she goes shopping with her friend Flora and Flora's mother (Betsy's co-guardian, she's an orphan), and Lady Mellasin wants Flora to look better so she pressures Betsy into getting last season's silk, and Betsy is pissed because she should be able to pick out her own fabric, so she gets in an argument and goes back and returns it, and when she comes back Flora is having sex with the guy. Teenagers, huh?
I just commented on a column in the local paper because I have Strong Feelings about underage drinking, in large part because the rurality of this area means that it always goes along with drunk driving. Only now I'm going "why did you do that, delete, delete," but it's not approved yet so I can't delete it. :/ But FFS, if having your name in the paper for underage drinking is going to RUIN YOUR LIFE FOREVER and keep you from ever getting a job or getting into college, use some sense and keep from getting caught by the police. Never has it been more apparent that I am an alien and not a normal person, I suppose.
