chocolatepotSorry I have been bad about reading my flist this week! I'm trying to catch up.
The gown is completely finished, but as I remarked last night, I should probably take it apart a bit and fix it at some point. This has been an amazing learning experience for me, sleeve-wise, in realizing how to get them to fit smoothly over the shoulder without a big puff from pleating, and I've had a great big revelation about getting straps up on the shoulder rather than at the edge - but I still have one sleeve at a wrong angle, and the shoulders could be even further in. Plus the lining and outer fabric are not, um, completely together in the fronts, so I need to unpick the edges and match them up properly. In my defense, the linen is kind of loosely woven and shifty - plus, four days and a hand-sewn gown, I'm giving myself a break. Four days, and I spent half of the first one washing, drying, and ironing fabric, and had to also spend time unpicking and repleating the skirt, and taking out and putting back in the sleeves.
It also doesn't seem to fit quite right unless I lace down about 2.5" from my natural waist, which is exciting but a bit difficult. But it looks really, really good. A hard choice. At last I understand screeds about how seductive tight-lacing is and it will turn all our young women into vapid, feeble, useless things ...
Actually, I am slightly concerned about my ability to sit in the car (and drive it) while laced that tight, but hey. Fashion before ease.

Date: 2013-09-21 04:28 pm (UTC)This is why I'd never want to be a re-enactor or dress up in period clothing that wasn't comfortable XD. I can't put looking good over feeling good. Even with clothes today -- very high heels? SPANX?! Oh hell no.

Date: 2013-09-21 08:51 pm (UTC)I have the worst feet. I love heels and sometimes I look pretty good in them, but I have yet to wear a pair that don't either hurt the internal muscles in my foot or give me blisters. :(
