I don't really have any DNWs. Darkfic is fine, and I love whump and hurt/comfort! Nothing is off the table, as long as it's something you genuinely want to write and think would make a good story - but also, don't worry about trying to be dark just to please me, I also love fluff. And everything in between. Setting AUs and canon divergence AUs are also fine with me, although I'd generally not prefer mundane modern AUs (college AUs, various occupational AUs, etc.). Mundane historical AUs are okay!
Queen's Thief
As I write this, I'm still in the midst of Return of the Thief. Aaaaahh! I'll come back and edit with more specifics to take the ending into account, but in general, I am OBSESSED with kingship and queenship, and this is obviously a fantastic fandom for that. Queenship in particular, with the restrictions of gender combined with power, the need to navigate a tricky path as a reigning queen and to stick to established tropes as a consort, is my jam. That honestly flows out to non-royal women as well - most people seem interested in the rule-breakers, but I'm more about the women who balance gendered expectations with their own agency.
Also, Heiro in particular. Somebody get that girl an adoring husband. (Or wife.) She deserves love!
I also love the tension between the three cultures of the Little Peninsula, and between them and the Mede. Any worldbuilding you can work in would be lovely. Also, of course, the gods! We got a lot of divine content in ROTT, and you could play with that.
I love all the canon romances, plus the semi-canon Costis/Kamet, and I'm jonesing for the latter after ROTT didn't really confirm them (I feel like the parallel to Teleus/Relius is like. kind of confirmation). Attolia/Gen is my best love, though, at every stage of their relationship, from "she hates him" to "we're working it out" to "lovebirds".
PHERIS. What an interesting new viewpoint. I love the way he bonds with Gen and Kamet as outsiders who rely on their brains, and Gen's compassion toward him (since we very rarely see that in canon, as he's always being viewed through others' eyes and in situations where he needs to be sharp).
Hector and Eugenia!!! I love babyfic/kidfic, so if you've a mind to, go nuts.
Howl's Moving Castle et al.
Yeah, yeah, I clearly have a type. I like outrageous fictional men who would be so annoying in person and the iron-spined fictional women who love them. Whatever!
I love fics that just give me MORE of that dynamic - Howl and Sophie battling it out, Calcifer commentating, Michael trying to actually live his life. It's fun! You can wind it up and let it spin out and it's wonderful. And reasons to make them go back to Wales are A+.
I'd also love a fic that goes a little deeper, if you've a mind to do it. Maybe a moment when Howl's teaching and mentoring Michael (a flashback to when he took Michael in?), or Howl and Sophie managing to communicate their affection without yelling, or Sophie older-sistering Michael.
A Little Princess
I've been a fan of this book since I don't know when. It is SUCH idfic, isn't it?
- The near misses of the Carmichaels seeing/interacting with Sara and then visiting Carrisford that have you screaming inside your head
- Carrisford practically having a heart attack and being unable to explain anything while Sara tells him her story, not knowing that he's her father's friend
- Sara's apparent good humor covering up rage at the unfairness of it all, and the occasional times it slips
The one thing that always sits badly is Becky's role as the slavish retainer. In the context of the kind of life she could expect to have had, yeah, getting to be Sara's maid is a wonderfully happy ending - but I always want to see FHB allow her to be smart, or better at something than Sara, or upset at the unfairness of life as well. You don't have to focus the fic on her at all, but I would love it if it acknowledges that she's a person.
Something else I'm always interested in with this book is - what happens next? How is Sara changed by her experience, and how does she cope with the trauma? How does she interact with society people in the future who'd never dream of possibly having to be abused servants?
