I think I need to make it a policy with myself to, when making modern clothes, sew only the long seams on the machine. Or else to just do it completely by hand. Because I'm working on this dress - this dress for me to be a bridesmaid in next weekend - and it is pissing me off so much. From the irritation that I may have bought silk with polyester in it (not necessarily a terrible thing, but it pisses me off when stores label fabric as one thing when it's actually a blend, and it's happened to me a couple of times) to the wrinkliness to accidentally catching bodice fabric while understitching the facing, I just feel like I am terrible at sewing on a machine, even when I'm making an effort to go slowly.

I tell myself this every time I sew and yet I never do just do it by hand. I probably won't next time, either.

- 5 minute break -

Okay, less rageful and angry. I suppose it helps that I cleaned up the dining room/my sewing table as well so that the next time someone complains about it I can point out that I did get it mostly squared away.

Okay, I have returned to the isle of sanity.

You see, at the risk of sounding like the unsophisticate I am, I don't believe I've come into contact with taffeta in a non-historic, museum context, really. So at first feel I can't quite tell the difference between silk (dupioni, but a very good dupioni) taffeta and poly/acetate taffeta, because science has come a long way there. Then my second impression, while I'm working with it, is that it's so horrible and slippery to work with and I hate it so it must be man-made. But then I made a breakthrough while working on the skirt - it started to feel more like silk to me, I don't know, and I realized that the machine is part of the problem in dealing with it. I've started to really want to make something historical out of it by hand, because I'm getting the hang of it and liking its luster and feel. And the sound, of course, who doesn't love the sound?

Anyway, I'm feeling better and this dress is really coming along. I need to pleat the skirt, attach it to the bodice, put in the zipper, hem it, and bind the armscyes. When I type it all out it looks like a lot, but when I imagine it I'm doing quite well.
