I had a major meltdown last night, but I got to say some things out loud and get responses from my dad, which was A++. He also reassured me that I did not have to be great at sewing modern clothes, because that's not "my thing" even though I feel like it ought to be for some reason. (Not that he was saying, "hey, it's not your thing," it's that I was insisting that I felt like it was supposed to be, probably because people always assume I can whip dresses up out of nothing because I went to FIT rite?) My dress is not fitting perfectly, but I just realized it's because I switched around the back and side back pieces (...) and while that's somewhat disheartening, a) it's also hilarious, and b) knowing what you did wrong and taking steps towards fixing it is a million times better than going OH GOD WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WHAT IS WRONG IT JUST DOESN'T FIT HOW DO I FIX??? My taking steps will probably be to take it in in darts at the back. I would love to take apart the seams and switch the two messed up pieces, but oops I already cut off the "inexplicably" long ends of the facings. It is a bit irritating since I was making an effort to add these flattering diagonal seams in the back, but I believe it is fixable. And I'm going to try making this again, because I think one of the things that holds me back from getting better is that I've never made a pattern twice so far.
