Clothing Crises
Jul. 23rd, 2014 09:21 amThis always happens when I start reading articles on better shopping/dressing practices (thanks,
nuranar) - I end up trapped in a loop of "I should buy better things"/"no, I should make things"/"but I won't actually make anything and then I end up buying cheap clothes instead"/"so I should get myself into the habit of making clothes"/"or I should count my time as money and pay the equivalent". But before we went on vacation I dug out all my patterns, and when I get home I'm going to buy some summer and fall fabric and make some skirts, at least. I have two easy Vogue skirt patterns - one pencil, one yoked - and I've used the pencil one before. With Mom's help, I should get a much better result (the one I've done has a waistline facing that always pops up and I still didn't know how to set in a zipper properly at that point; ironically it was made while I was at FIT). And she says pants are "really easy" and I should be able to make some that fit me better than the retail options.
Can't decide if I want to try to get into making underwear and/or swimwear. On the one hand, HARD. I only have a basic sewing machine and no experience with knits. On the other, while I love the retro-styled suit I got at Target, the cups still aren't really big enough (I'd say they're Cs, while other be-cupped swimsuits I've had were Bs) and unless I go expensive or make my own I'm never going to get a bathing suit that truly fits me. Tap pants, though, I should just make some tap pants. I even have a pattern I took at the Chapman and it's so simple. Tap pants can also be made by hand.
