And for a companion to my last post have an article from the NYPost on how JKR is sexist against men but also believes that men rule, I'm not really sure what the message is. But it's, um, very virulent.

I may have a job lined up - I had an interview at the Yankee Candle in the mall, and I absolutely killed. And Old Navy called me back for one as well. And my back unemployment pay came through a little while ago so I'm at least not strapped for cash (and may get my car's air conditioning fixed, it's very uncomfortable in this heat). And I was paid $20 for hemming someone's skirt for the museum's Silver Gala.

I've started reading Game of Thrones for real this time! And I'm loving it. I do think GRRM goes overboard with how young the characters are, though. I think I love Tyrion even more in the book. I have a weird thing going on there I like some of the names - Eddard, Cersei, Tyrion, Sansa, Sandor - and hate some of the others - Catelyn will never not read as too modern to me, Jaime ought to be pronounced "Jame" or the Spanish way. And I'm not fond of the "Ser" for "Sir" convention.

I am reading it also, I have about 100 pages left, and I've watched 1 1/2 episodes of the TV show. It's great but I have to take the book in limited does (< 150 pages) or all the bad decisions people make start getting to me. :) I think the TV show actually seems easier to deal with than the book when it comes to painful events, maybe because you're not inside their heads...

I know what you mean about the names. There are other "normal" names like Brandon (Bran), Robert (Robb), Joffrey, Jon... But Catelyn actually sounds like a modern trend of "lyn" names and Y-names, which is why it rings funny. There's her sister Lysa too... maybe it's a Tully thing. The book's 15 years old, I wonder if he actually named the characters before the trend started...

At first when I noticed the Kingslayer's name was spelled "Jaime" instead of the normal modern "Jamie" I thought maybe it would be pronounced "Jame" like you say, but according to the TV show I guess not.

Good luck with the job!

I actually watched the whole show before I even started. In some ways it's making it harder for me - there's no suspense, it's just a really long book where I know what's going to happen. But I think there's a lot of exposition that may not have come across in the show, and I don't want to jump into Clash of Kings without having read Game of Thrones properly. And I'm terrible about remembering names given in TV shows, so hopefully I'll get all the names straight now.

Thanks!

I'm on the third book now, even if a lot of people say it is the best so far...I oddly find myself prefering the first one by far. Would be interesting to read your take on this story. To me it is another prime example how an author gets to much praise for his own good, better said for our good.

The first book is that good IMO because there he isn't yet using violence for no good reasons, describing food...till you want to kill him or has a storyline going on one seriously wants to skip it all together. But it is intriguing and a rather good read.
