I both hate and love when that happens

I started to type about trying to figure out "en barriere", but the act of thinking about it has made me realize that it's when trim is put around the petticoat above knee level or around the upper arm - not an on edge. Seems so simple now.
It's interesting that the Lady's Magazine devotes no page space to fashion in the 1770s. I don't know if the assumption was that readers would prefer to get their fashion information from Galerie des Modes, or if there was some kind of moral component (when it does mention fashion, it's often recommending not being too fashionable).
