I think what makes The Shuttle work so well, when it actually kind of falls into the "this would all be solved by talking to each other and not being silly and over-proud" issues a lot of modern romance novels have, is that the reason they don't talk and Betty has to hide her feelings is that she can't let anyone see her emotional reactions to Mount Dunstan and can't go to see him as he hasn't made any advances, because it's Not Done. Definitely a concept that would help a lot of books avoid the trap of characters just being mulish and coming up with bizarre reasons for not talking to one another.
