I love doing research - I realized that you can snip images from Google Books which means you can put fashion plates from old periodicals on Tumblr - but I keep finding loads of stuff that contradicts things I "know" which is urghhhh. Mainly wrt formality. The thing is, there's a sort of "rule" that evening dress is short sleeves and low necklines and nice fabric, and less expensive/fine fabric and less skin showing as you go earlier in the day. But I think that only kicks in ... IDK when yet. Because I've been putting 1830 and 1807 plates on Tumblr and there are plenty of long-sleeved evening dresses (mostly 1830) and short-sleeved morning dresses (mostly 1807). BAH. BAH. It's good to correct your assumptions but it makes me feel very stupid afterward.

Reading theproblematicpetticoat's chapter-by-chapter of Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. It's awesome.

It's very striking to me how natural the 1800s plates look and how they get progressively more stylized in the face and body as the century goes on, usually to look more delicate and (imo) stupid, and to have more exaggerated proportions.
