Oh god, I kind of like this woman on Tumblr whose focus is on feminism and history and generally does a good job, but I've always given her the stink-eye for posting whole articles from Cracked rather than linking to them ... and now she says the term Ginger "is a slur like calling a POC the N word, a mentally disabled person the R word, or caiing a woman the C word." And that it totally started as a pejorative with South Park. And I don't know if I can handle this.
I actually tried on my 1910s corset yesterday and it fit surprisingly well. It could do with a dart at the bottom, but it's wearable. I don't know why I thought it wasn't. So I'm happy about that. I got it out so I could check the measurements with my mockup, and I think I've made the new one more curvy which is good. But I am still nostalgic for the days when you'd go to a corsetiere and get measured and fitted like with bras, because then this would all be unnecessary.
I also actually ordered spring steels for the corset. :O I was ordering a busk and steels are fairly cheap so it made sense to get them that way rather than going out to buy cable ties. I almost only bought enough for half the corset but at the last minute I remembered I needed to double that. SO EXCITED. I feel like I learned a lot from the corset sew-along and I'm a lot more comfortable with the idea.
According to the internet, my VPLL skirt pattern is out for delivery. And I have fabric for that, and mockup fabric for that, so I can work on that this afternoon. Yay! Getting shit done is the best. I might also make a paper pattern for a bonnet.

Date: 2012-12-31 09:43 pm (UTC)Wait, she's a fan of Cracked and thinks Ginger is offensive? Are we talking about the same cracked.com? I mean, as far as humor/snark websites go it's actually fairly tame, but still, they're not exactly polite. And honestly, all of those things are different... look, I hate the R word, but most people who say it aren't trying to convey any sort of hatred. The N word has a whole different set of implications. You can't say one is like the other.
In any case, feminists/activists like that give sane people a bad name. I consider myself a feminist, but it's hard to say that without people assuming I burn bras and hate men. (Nevermind that the bra burning thing is a complete myth.)

Date: 2013-01-01 05:21 am (UTC)I sort-of-know a guy on the internet who claims that having red hair means he's terribly oppressed. Unlike women or any other actual political minority you can name. No, the only people in the world who are oppressed are red-headed straight middle class Anglo cismen living in England.
