No, if you've never read the Harry Potter books(/listened to them on audiotape), you aren't a real fan. Sorry, Tumblr. It's seven books, half of which are pretty short.
Tumblr has really gone over the edge with "anyone can identify as anything they feel like no matter what." Like... okay, LotR is a pain in the butt to read, and I can't imagine the Council of Elrond being real fun on audiotape either. The Hobbit's an easy read, but it's still Tolkein, so I can get why some people might have difficulty with it. (That doesn't excuse that one person who was butthurt over "spoilers" in fanfic for it.) But JKR?
Yeah, I get that there are people who say you can't be a Star Wars fan without reading the EU, or a D&D fan if you don't have all the sourcebooks, and nerd levels can get pretty dumb. But Harry Potter, come on.
Yes! Same with ASOIAF vs. GoT -not only is ASOIAF incredibly long, GoT makes enough plot/characterization changes (and will be making more once it laps the books, most likely) that it's totally legit to call yourself a fan of Westeros while only doing one. Or FMA manga vs. anime, I've heard similar things.
Also, come on, you're doing yourself a disservice if you limit yourself to the movies. Love yourself.
