Dec. 23rd, 2015 06:55 pmFinally got around to downloading Versailles! I'm liking it, apart from the fact that only the first episode got repacked and the others apparently all turn into French around 40 minutes in. (I can pick up a very little bit.)
A couple of things are annoying me:
- WTF is with this doctor girl? Ughhhhhhh. I hate this stereotype. I also hate the fact that she always turns up in her bodies rather than a gown. Why.
I mean, I do get it. They wanted a female character who's not royalty or a courtier. But she takes up screentime that could be used to develop other female characters based on actual people.
- Like Louise de la V. She should get fleshed out more than "well, she was very religious, so why shouldn't she scourge herself as penance for sleeping with Louis?" She deserves her own movie/series tbh. I started reading a book based on her, but it was too cliché and I couldn't get more than a few chapters into it.
- Or one of the précieuses! COME ON.
- They're always so fond of casting dark women as Spanish royalty, what's up with that? Maria Theresa, like Catherine of Aragon, was fair. But dark or fair, she wasn't dumb enough to get pregnant from an affair, especially not with someone whose child would likely be impossible to pass off as Louis's.
But a couple of things are really pleasing me:
- Monsieur's lust for war is unstereotypical but accurate, so points to them for not cutting it. He and Henriette have a more complex relationship than was portrayed in, for example, Charles II: the Power and the Passion. Bad on the writers for implying that he was put in dresses as a child so as not to outshine Louis, which makes no sense.
- The costumes are pretty good! In fairness, this is an easy period - back-lacing is appropriate, for one thing. And I'm sure I'd find more fault with it apart from the lack of really poofy sleeves if this were a period I knew better (I rewatched Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, augh it was worse than I'd remembered in this respect).
HAHAHAHA Just before I post I hit a scene with a chemise which is literally shirt length. WTF.
- Sophie's so beautiful and that builder she flirts with is so cute. *_*
I've made the banana bread, but need to pack. I don't know what to wear - it's supposed to be 70 tomorrow. I'm in winter clothing mode.
