Feb. 29th, 2016 04:58 pmI meant to chill today, but had to go out very early because I had no bagels. And then again to Potsdam to pick up stuff at the museum, and then again to the grocery store. Did laundry, watched a ton of Amazon Prime - finished Poldark, now am finishing Wolf Hall. (Both I trailed off d/ling partway through.) I have to say, the costumes in the latter really do please me. Colors are too dull, yes, French hoods are bad, but there are so many details that are right, especially noticeable after watching Poldark.
Still working on translating the Art of the Toilette, although it's kind of boring - I did pages about depilatory creams, so I skipped ahead and now am getting into caring for your wardrobe.
Went to see Hail Caesar yesterday, loved it. I don't know why people are saying it's not that good (if Owen is correct that they are) - it has some great jokes, although the Burton Guerney stuff is kind of basic gay jokes that I'm surprised made it to the final screening in this day and age, and the cinematography is great.
I'm working slowly through this book on Margaret Douglas by Alison Weir. It's on the dull side - in part because of Weir's style, in part because it's biography instead of general social history, in part because where I'm at is all about Henry VIII's court and that's so well-trod - but still interesting because Margaret Douglas was SO important, as H's niece, but never ever appears in fiction about the period. (Outside of the single Philippa Gregory novel focusing on her that I'm sure exists, probably having sex with her brother in it.) She was higher in the succession than Mary and Elizabeth, once they were delegitimized, had her own precontracting/betrothal scandal, and was considered more like the king's daughter when it came to marriage prospects.
