I just realized that I put the body of the bustle together wrong. The edges of the pieces that were supposed to be at the center are on the sides. It's not bad, definitely not bad enough for me to take it all apart and fix it right now, but now I need to put "properly done bustle" on the list with "properly done stays". It gives me the right shape generally, it's just that my confusion led me to make the top bone channel curve down instead of up, so I don't get that sharp corner you can see here. (Looking back at that page, I can see what misled me, but I can also see the places marked "CB" and go "wtf is wrong with me?") The reed is a bit flimsy, so I think in that later project I will also make the channels slightly wider and double the boning. Although now that I look at extants, they do not tend to have that upward projection, so it's really not so bad.

Still, this = done and corset = done (once I sew down that binding) and no more railroad trip means I can get going on the bustle dress. Question for those in the know: 1873, light blue semi-transparent lawn, more opaque cotton in the same color and some in white - should I fully line the bodice (except maybe the sleeves) and base skirt, or should I make the dress unlined and have a corset cover and foundation skirt (in the same waistband as the lawn)? I've never examined an extant summer dress, so I'm not quite sure what's the norm. I wouldn't call this my inspiration, it's not like I'm copying it, but it's my main source right now, and it looks to me like a short-sleeved lining to the bodice, but IDK.

ETA: I just came across this bodice that appears to have a built-in short-sleeved corset cover/lining, so I think I might go with that.

When Bernice bobbed her hair in 1920 it signified a change in her personality from mousey to sassy. (source)

Congratulations on completely missing the point of "Bernice Bobs Her Hair", probably due to not reading it. (Bernice gets popular because she talks about bobbing her hair. When her cousin pushes the issue and she has to go through with it, she comes out looking awkward and foolish and loses all her charm for the local kids.)
