I just want to say, so I can get it out of my system and close out the tab, that this page has a picture that Austen seems to have identified as looking like Mrs. Bingley, and that picture shows a very cherubic, round face with a small nose and rosebud lips. I think Susannah Harker did a brilliant job as Jane, but no, in period she would not have been considered more beautiful than Jennifer Ehle.

I got a little confused about the first part of your posting because my P&P knowledge is so bad (WHICH one is Mrs. Bingley, again?) ...

But I just watched the P&P miniseries like two months ago. And I just wanted to say: in period? Forget even in period -- all I could think while watching P&P, every time somebody remarked on Jane being the pretty one, was, Both actresses are doing a very awesome job and all, but: are they KIDDING us with the suggestion that the Jane actress is ACTUALLY PRETTIER than the Elizabeth actress?? Because she so isn't. NO OFFENSE TO HER, but Elizabeth is CLEARLY more beautiful than Jane. Do they think we are dumb, or something??

... so, y'know: you are right and the other person is wrong. For what that's worth. XD

Yes, the other person in the argument (... six months ago) was saying that even though Elizabeth looks prettier to us today, the casting is actually perfect for the period. Just look at some portraits from that era! they said. And the my head exploded from rage because one of my classes was almost entirely based on looking at portraits.

I always think it's funny how that rich girl Wickham sets his sights on is supposed to be so ugly, though. She's so pretty! I guess it was her red hair or something.

Yeah, I think the casting person/director/someone decided to make the point that red hair + freckles was considered unattractive no matter how pretty you were, and possibly that Lydia was jealous.
