chocolatepot: Bodice of a woman from a painting by Ingres (Ingres)

I've actually been doing a bit more fashion history blogging lately. A plaintive question about why everyone has a particular definition for the piƩmontaise (I suspect nobody knows - it's much easier to research at FIT's library) which has given me the desire to sew one; a look at brassieres in the early 20th century and a short followup. I find it very interesting that all those heavily-boned ones aren't heavily-boned to support a large bust, but to be, basically, a shell to drape a dress over. I can't really imagine it. At least a push-up bra pushes up what you actually have.
