Mockingjay

I just feel ... bruised. In a whirl. Coherent thoughts:

- I didn't lose it until Buttercup came back home. Combination of Katniss losing it as well and the "animal can't understand why but knows its human is gone" thing that always gets to me. I would say that roughly half an hour prior to Prim's death I was thinking about how great it was that Prim was a constant in Katniss's life and was more important to Katniss than anything else, especially the romance.

- It's interesting to me that some people interpreted the series as having black-and-white characterizations. "Interesting" is not the right word. Simplistic? Stupid seems too far. But there are barely any purely good, innocent characters - Prim, Annie ... Everyone else has a dark side. And the characters who are Bad tend to have some spark of something in them that causes sympathy, whether it's "they had a really sad death" or "well, at least they're opposing the Capital?" If I were going to criticize a whole swath of characterization like that, I'd probably call it grimdark.

- Why oh why oh why Finnick? I was shipping heavily from the second it was mentioned that he was with Annie. Their relationship trope (two broken people who need each other badly, esp. if one is only mostly functional) is one of the many dear to my heart.

- Peeta's whole storyline was so painful but I have to admit, my Id ate it up. Torture makes my heart go pitter-pat. Well, not so much torture as the aftermath, the healing, the moment when you go "Peeta is himself again! Darker, but himself!"

- I feel like either Catching Fire should have spent some time with the rebels without being suspicious of them at all, or else Mockingjay should have been split into two. Peeta's and Katniss's arcs at the end just felt very shortened - and it felt like there should have been more story after Coin's death.

- Because I'm a bit stupid, when Katniss voted for a Capital game - that was just to keep Coin from thinking anything was up, right?

- Obviously coming to a series from a semi-spoiled perspective changes one's perspective, but it seemed clear to me that, as in Twilight, rivals =/= love triangle. IMO, it's not really a triangle unless both choices are equally viable. Or, well, technically it is a triangle, but there's a difference between "three people involved in relationship drama" and "which way will it go???" I don't know if it's just that many people in fandom have difficulty separating "I prefer this ship" and "This ship really seems like it's going to be the endgame," or if encouraging shipwars is seen as a great marketing tool these days, or what, but I'm getting tired of it. *shakes cane* Come up with elaborate symbolism and shipnames that don't make any sense to people who don't know the injokes or go home.

- God, what a good series. There are things I would have changed, yeah, but it's fantastic. Collins is a great writer in both writing writing and plotting.

- :/ I went to FFN to see if there was any Idtastic h/c fic about things like Snow pimping out victors or whatevs - AO3 often tends towards humanizing unsympathetic characters and generally good stuff that's a bit cerebral or reflecty - and it is nearly all what I assume is Sponsor Your Own Tribute games fic.
