Ugh, stays

As usual, I'm having fit issues. I wouldn't have checked at this point (one back piece finished, one half done, eyelets done) except that I was looking at my pattern printout with the calculations all over it and realized that it said I should have the front pieces 7" across at the waist, each, and I had made them 8", which made me go WHOA WAIT STOP. I did the channels on either side of center front and put some boning in and tried them on; obviously they don't fit as perfectly as they ought because they can't give me much support, but for now they're okay. The waist does seem to fit so I guess I did something right. And right now there's about a two-inch gap at the back (which is better than any other corsetry I've done).
The annoying thing (apart from putting yourself in back-lacing stays - any tips?) is that I have to cut down the corners on the front where the straps tie on. On the one hand, they're very clearly too long as they are, and I nearly always have to cinch my bra straps pretty short so it makes sense that I would need to make alterations here. On the other, it's a pretty good-sized chunk to take off and it might make the top curve kind of shallow. I really need somebody to write a good guide to stay-making, explaining how to deal with fit issues and how to tell when they exist and such. Where the neckline is supposed to hit. How deep the point should be. How to fit yourself for stays properly (I've never found the cardboard mockups to be that helpful). I don't know, I just want someone to come in and lace up the back for me and poke me a bit and tell me exactly what to do. I was going to take pictures so I could get it through the internet but it was so annoying getting it on and then trying to figure out the new neckline curve that I couldn't be bothered.
It's sad that life isn't like a video game, and I can't just level up in sewing/fashion history and magically gain new skills. (If I could, think of all the XP I'd get from those fashion plate translations.)
Om nom. This pot roast may have originally been overcooked, but heating it up with the beer aspic makes it so nice. I'm sad to see it go.
