There's a database of American newspapers in the NYPL that you can access with a library card. Which isn't very helpful to most people as you can't get the card online or if you live out of state, but if you already have the card or live in NYC you can get in. The search engine is crappy, though. I don't understand why it won't let me just see which periodicals that were published before 1790 are available.
