More sewing blahblah

chocolatepotThe trouble with Pinterest is that it doesn't prevent you from double pinning. I'm trying to figure out who that'd be a feature for but can't. You don't need something twice in the same board. I tend to go on blitzes where I tell the Met to show me everything in the Costume Institute between two years and then pin it all, and sometimes I've already gotten most of the evening dresses, say, but can't be sure about the day dresses, etc.
So I'm looking at Joann's for a few yards of linen-look for this skirt because I didn't buy enough from Fabric.com (like an idiot). The problem is that they don't have the same colorway, I think; there's a square that looks kind of like it but it's hard to tell and I'd rather not be just slightly off. Fabric.com doesn't have it anymore, so I'm kind of locked in, also I want to buy crinoline and wire while I'm at it for a bonnet. My question is: should I go with a contrast color or a brown that will kind of match the gold? (The blouse will be light blue with red stripes.) This pattern does work with having two colors, I should add - it's shown that way in the pattern picture. What I have is close to Honey; I'm thinking of Blue Radiance if I go for contrast (it's close to the shirting color I have), or Potting Soil if I want to go for something that more matches. The trouble is that I'm not that good about matching colors because just about everything looks good to me.
So, the bonnet. I want a shape that will work for the late 1830s and early 1840s, so I'm going with something like this or this. Just looking at it makes me happy. I worked on the paper pattern yesterday but unfortunately as I kept trimming the crown from the head-facing side and it's tapered, I ended up making it too small. But I'm basically there. There's more than enough dupioni taffeta left over from my bridesmaid dress to cover it. It's a bit vivid, but ... I really like it.
I was thinking about dupioni because I saw another remark recently that it was unsuitable for historical sewing because it's so slubby. And I have to wonder if this is because people have a narrow idea of what dupioni is, and really like having set rules? Because (I may have already said this) this dupioni is not slubby. The dupioni shantung I got ages ago for a bridesmaid dress for my mom's wedding? Yeah, that was thick and knobbly and you couldn't use that. And IDK about the Solid Silk dupioni, I might order a bit just so I can know what it's like(and see if I can use it instead of the blue), but the light weight stuff is really fine and useful.
