The thing about Night Circus
Jan. 14th, 2013 01:18 pmWhich I overall really like (except for the atmospheric bits, except for the rêveurs, because that is the most real-feeling), but I have this issue with the Bailey bits.
It may go in a totally different direction and I'm whining about nothing, but - the thing is, it's not that his father's being unfair, it's that life is simply unfair.
Yes, his father could be less of a pain about him wanting to go to Harvard, but the issue isn't just that he's "forgotten he used to be someone's dream". It's a family farm. Caroline and Bailey are the only kids, as far as I can tell (unless older brothers were mentioned earlier and I didn't notice them at the time, v. possible). Their father can't retire, he's probably going to be active on the farm for the rest of his life, but someone's going to need to take over the main farm-running from him at some point. If Bailey goes to Harvard, he's probably not going to want to do that, and I wouldn't blame him, but it leaves a hole. It means that Caroline now has the responsibility to marry someone who can take over the farm, which isn't fair on her either.
IDK maybe I am way misreading this bit but it's just not sitting well with me.
