Mar. 11th, 2013 07:42 pmI got the second Godey's I bought today, the $15 one. I didn't realize/remember that it has no color plates - at first I was really disappointed, but then as I started going through it I realized that it's still really, really useful. My main interest is in collars and undersleeves and fichus, and those aren't shown as fully in the color plates as they are in the "Novelties for [Month]"/work department. And I also want the embroidery/scalloping patterns.
It's interesting to note that the 1864 volume work department is mostly clothing, while the 1875 one is mostly tchochkes, pen wipers and pincushions and tobacco pouches. Is this because of the rise in department stores selling unfitted or slightly fitted items? Someone write a paper on this.
