Jan. 20th, 2015 09:47 amI wish I'd thought to find the original Thompson's crinolette the pattern and Bradfield drawing are based on! That would have been useful. I think I need to unpick some of the top seam of the top channel in the skirt and move the straps around a bit. If only Nancy had measured the distance between them!
It also looks like the shaping was all in the cut of the cf and cb seams, too, not with darts like in this pattern. Sigh. Well, I wouldn't have gotten this far just from drafting the pattern myself - if I ever make it again (probably won't), I'll dart the pattern itself and cut out the fabric to that shape. Hmm, it looks like the straps are sewn to the bag post-boning, too.
I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do for the bustle itself. My inclination is to make it separately (a ruffled buckram thing to tie on over the hoop) or to make it according to the original, but not rivet it to the hoop itself - make new straps for the sides and sew a tape or three between them to make it bow out, and tack all the straps to the hoop. It's just that lately I've been really interested in the late 1860s, and I want to be able to use the hoop for that too without totally remaking it! We'll see.
Did an application this morning! For a fellowship for the summer, really, but there's free housing/utilities plus a small stipend, so I'd be coming out ahead of where I am now. There are two more paid internships I have to apply to. Obvs not my preferred kind of position, but better than none.
