Ugh, so many things to say that I keep putting off.

Star Wars: Totally Friggin' Amazing

Owen and Dad and I went to see TFA on Christmas Eve. We got there extra early because they thought they could pick up a few last minute gifts but everything was closed,so we just walked around Crossgates Mall for 30 minutes or so - when we got to the end, Owen ran up a down escalator and I thought, by God, I have always wanted run run up a down escalator. So I did. But the top was very tricky and I fell down and banged my knee and it hurt the next day, so I suppose I learned something (not to fall down when climbing a down escalator). Then we went in and suffered through about 30 minutes of previews.

But when "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ..." popped up on the screen, and then it went black and I was breathless with anticipation, and then BANG BRASS PERCUSSION MAGICAL THEME and words scrolling ... reader, I teared up. I'm not a typical Star Wars nerd, I've never cosplayed it at all, I like the EU novels everyone else hates, but I actually am a huge Star Wars nerd, I just keep forgetting. For some reason Star Wars is desperately important to me and I care a lot.

The only issue I have with the movie is that the action scenes, as literally always these days, were way too complex. They have to do it now because a) they always want to outdo the last big thing and b) Hollywood makes most of its money internationally and the international market loves big action scenes with no dialogue and therefore subtitles. But last night we watched ANH and it got to spend so much more time on visuals and emotions because the technology prevented them from wasting so much time on drawn out action sequences. You can describe the older ones blow-by-blow in about three sentences, but in TFA it would take ages. Nothing to be done, nobody will ever deliberately step backwards on this point.

So yes, I loved it. It's a complete rehash of ANH but that>>>>>TPM so what does it matter? It's classic Star Wars with a woman and a black man as the protagonists, that's pretty great.

BB-8 is cute and all but I could have done without him, though. We don't need a cute animal sidekick and overall he was reminiscent of the horror that was R2-D2 in the prequels because he was so fast and capable.

Doctor Who's special was excellent, watched it this morning. Downton's lacked something but gave the only three characters I care about (Edith, Thomas, and Daisy) some good stuff, so yay for that.
