I went to see Wonder Woman this afternoon, and I'm very glad I liked it so much as I watched the last two parts of the Doctor Who three-parter and did not like it.

The trouble with Who is that showrunners seem to get stuck in these ruts where they can't get away from their favorite past tropes. Maybe they should switch up more often?

But anyway, it reminded me a lot of The Silence and of Amy remembering the world back, and just as most of the two-parters feel like a one-parter stretched too far, this didn't seem to need to be three episodes.

So, Wonder Woman. A lot of this movie seemed like a response to Captain America, which I'm sure has been pointed out a lot of times but I don't read spoilery reviews before I go.

- Woman who fights and wears red and blue
- American named Steve (somewhat anachronistic here, I think)
- Small diverse squadron that helps them
- Budding romance ends with a death involving a plane

Only they were like: what if the woman were the hero? And what if it's set in the less glamorous war notorious for death on both sides? And what if the other members of the team get to have personalities and actually do things? And if the villain isn't a German commander but a member of the home team?

(It was genius to have it be Thewlis, because I was too busy thinking "David Thewlis is so AWKWARD looking, I'm happy he found work since I haven't seen him in anything in ages" to suspect him at all.)

(Did Dr. Poison die or could she have plausibly gotten out? She was onscreen a lot for nothing at all to come of her, but if she's going to be a villain in the sequel, it would make sense.)

And also: I talk a reasonable amount about how I'm annoyed at the lack of heroines who are conventional for their settings, who get by by leaning in to expectations and have and wield power "within the system", so to speak (e.g.: Attolia, Sansa in a theoretical future), but I do actually still LOVE female characters who get to fight hard, when they actually spend their time doing that. I teared up when Diana went over the top, something something strength, something hope, something symbol ... underneath it all it's just that superheroines (and lady villains) rarely get to shrug off blows and bullets and just slam into people. They have powers or abilities that let them do something else or they fight in a really acrobatic(? like accuracy and speed over power) way. There is something about a powerful female bruiser/tank that makes me really happy and feelsy way beyond feminist moments in storytelling.

... Somebody should make a Protector of the Small movie/series.

So glad you liked WW too! I did think of the Captain America scene when Steve was off on his heroic self-sacrificing mission, but I didn't realize the other parallels.

Superhero movies aren't really my thing anymore, and I still found THE POWER OF LOVE message at the end a little simplistic and "of course" (and the romance TOTALLY UNNECESSARY, Diana was way too good for him), but damn I am glad they made this movie and it was this good and it exists for all the young girls out there. And I would see it again just for the scene where she climbs out of the trench to charge the field. I'm a sucker for those dramatic moments, as well as the acrobatic ones, and the PHENOMENAL Amazonian costumes (including Diana's headpiece, when she first puts it on -- AND THE CLOAK).

In summary, I think you and I are both feeling this tweet: https://twitter.com/megsauce/status/871179290238308354
