Today at work, I read the manual for PastPerfect Online (seems pretty simple for the most part), mocked up a really nice-looking layout for us, and spent the other six hours - for real - looking at other websites to see what they did that works and what looks/runs poorly. By the way, you can see and search everyone who uses PPO here, and there are LOADS of antique photos on it (since they're easy to store and scan, most likely) as well as a small number of decently dressed and photographed dresses and a larger number of atrociously photographed ones.

I'm most likely going to be bringing everything small down to the archives in the basement where there's a setup for taking pictures against a white backdrop. Things in the house can be shot where they are, it'll look decent. But clothing ... IDK. I took pictures of half the hanging stuff against a white sheet, and they're terrible for anything other than making it possible for people who aren't me to find anything in the first five racks. I don't even like the idea of photographing them lying on a table, it always looks dreadful. But maybe if I were to do lying-flat pictures plus patterns plus as-worn drawings, that would get it all in - but then that might seem like spending way too much time on one aspect of the collection, especially since it's not a highly emphasized aspect. (The Seneca Ray Stoddard photos are considered the most important part, I think.)

The absolute best thing would be if I could commandeer the Stoddard Gallery for a few days, get together some people with bustles and hoops and petticoats of varying sizes, and dress and photograph as many awesome dresses as possible! Why does life not work the way I want it to? I don't understand.

Installed at Mom's house. It's so small - my dresser is literally two drawers, and I could look out for a bigger one on CraigsList but it simply wouldn't fit in the room. I only have a twin bed, which is tricky to get used to, but it has a good mattress. And it's basically cold all the time. But it's nice here, and it's nice being back in Greenwich and being able to walk to the stores and library.

Which we did today, and I bought a box of antique/vintage books from the library basement which I am now putting on Etsy, since I've (mysteriously) sold all the rest I had up.

Still trying to decide how I feel about this Robin Hood fanfic I'm reading. It's clearly based on the BBC show with strategic details changed so it's public domain fic. See, on the one hand I have a juvenile "lol Mary Sue" reaction to the author's OFC, who loooves Guy of Gisbourne when that horrible Marian couldn't. On the other, I'm kind of rooting for her because hell yeah, you publish your self-insert fic for real money like all the rest of us wished we could have at 15. On the third hand, I'm disapproving of how the heroine can't understand that Guy pressing Marian when she was in love with someone else was the issue, not Marian's inability to stop spurning Guy. On the fourth hand, I realized that there's a big difference between Rhapsody/Ayla Sues that are just soooo amazing, and the kind of Sues that are not that amazing in and of themselves (ability-wise, looks-wise) but are ~special~ because of something emotional, the way they connect with someone or fulfill someone's need. And that second type doesn't annoy me half as much as the first. And one of the reasons Twilight irritates me is that Bella is so much the second that she becomes the first.

I am probably going to get one of Kay Gnagey's hoops at some point - the pictures on her website are pretty sketchy, but looking at LR Stern's 2013 wrap-up it actually is a really good shape.

AAAAHHHH so nervous about first day tomorrow even though I'm going back to a place where I know everyone, I know some of what I need to know and am going to learn what I don't, and what I don't is something nobody there knows so it's not like I'm going to be held up to some standard. Plus I REALLY, REALLY want to do some patterns for the website, and what will I doooo if they say no. But I mean, that would be an excellent draw, wouldn't it? If I did a good enough job and did interesting enough garments, people could care about it and use them, right? And it would be like "oh, you want an 1880s walking dress with an asymmetrical closure? or an everyday cotton dress from the early 1900s? or a sexy Directoire evening dress? Here's this site, they have a few of these patterns, if you're okay with scaling up." (Is anyone else okay with scaling up? It used to seem to me like most people used Arnold and Waugh, but now it feels like everyone uses Reconstructing History/Past Patterns/Truly Victorian/etc. and the people who can drape patterns just look at the books for general shapes. But I can't tell if this is real or just paranoia/confirmation bias.) And maybe that would increase site traffic and even give them some more visitors and researchers. I don't know, would you use them if there were some new free patterns posted, within the range 1850-1950 and not generally super fashionable (don't think there's any Paris couture)?

Thinking about the NYC 1880s fancy dress ball - since it's not a hand-sewn era, I'd kind of feel okay about using *gasp* synthetics and such if I were to plan to go. It made me realize again that for whatever reason, late Victorian evening wear is almost entirely neglected in the pattern books, so that's something I'm going to look out for when I get there.

(I'm going to see if I can do some patterns for the Chapman's website - they make a good addition to an online catalogue! I'll do representatives from every era if they'll let me, but more likely it will be a couple of simple 1920s evening dresses. Just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me publish some patterns.)

I think I'm going to go in on the 18th Century Hair & Wig Styling book. You already know I have ridiculous issues with spending money, so I've been hemming and hawing ... but it's probably a good investment. If I look better as a recreationist I look like I know what I'm doing, more professional, etc.

Where did my box of antique magazines go? I kept it out of the basement to keep it safe, but now I have no idea where that safe place was.

Getting sick. :(

I'm reading an article on struggling historic houses (super depressing, implies it's not just that the economy's bad but that the bicentennial sort of inflated all the numbers and it's just been decreasing since then because it was a special time), and on the second page they're talking about smartphone apps for self-guided tours and such.

“But there’s so much more we want to do,” he said, noting how great it would be to be able to lift his iPhone anywhere at Montpelier and see what life used to be like there, through images and interpretive videos and other information that would be presented based on the smartphone’s exact location and orientation.

THAT IS SO COOL.

I had some really good thoughts in the car this evening I was going to post, seriously, and now they're all gone. :(

Watching an episode of Lost Empires before writing tonight. Really good costumes, and good music, if you like the 1910s. Colin Firth in probably his early twenties, too.

JS&Mr.N coming to the small screen: Our picks for Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell? How about, respectively, Damian Lewis and Derek Jacobi? Lewis might be a bit old but WANT, that'd be perfect.

People have been reblogging Princess Diaries gifs lately and for real, my hair looks like that. it's so big and frizzy, just ridiculous.

I was looking at the un-numbered bonnet at work today and took a few pictures, then went over and got out a couple other bonnets and took pictures of them as well. I have a fascination with bonnets. I haven't tried to make one yet, or any kind of hat save an 18th century cap, and they seem so impossible that I can't help but think about them. I always get really stupid about ~omg is it unethical to post pictures from work without explicit permission~, but it's pretty stupid of me. I'm just always feeling guilty about something, I suppose. Exhibits with original text and arrangements and dressed mannequins, that's one thing, and posting pictures of those isn't even always prohibited - pictures of objects that aren't being shown and possibly are never going to be shown are completely different. I know this intellectually but emotionally it's hard. Anyway the point is I'm going to post the pictures to the blog with descriptions of what's going on.

I bought a couple more magazines on eBay. I can't help but be a little nervous that I'm spending too much and getting ~addicted~, but really everybody spends money on their passions and I've got a paycheck now. I need to figure out what I'm doing with the scans - I might make pages on my blog for each magazine, and just upload all the pictures? How much bandwidth does Blogger give you? Well, I'm trying it now.

Yesterday I looked into the Chapman's library more - there is a tiny card catalogue down in the archive, and I looked up Godey's, Peterson's, Montgomery-Ward, etc. in it. There was one Godey's (1858, I think), and none of the others, so I'm thinking that most of the ones I'm interested in are actually in the house's library, which is sort of interesting. After talking with Tim, I think the sort of books they want to give to the town library are the city directories and high school yearbooks and local histories. Which is pretty obvious, now that I think about it without the same panic I get when I see a Delineator on eBay for $80, that "oh no gone forever from my hot little hands" feeling.

ETA: Well, here is one magazine, not all the scans are great but I can fix them sometime. I bought an 1834 magazine on eBay for $26 including shipping, so that should go up sometime.

ETA2: Well, that ate a lot of my Blogger/Picasa space. Switching to Flickr for scan hosting, I'm not sure I want to buy extra storage space just yet. Except Flickr is giving me sass as well. Um. Give me some more time to think about this.

Why is it that every time I apply for a job, even though I always go, "why bother, they're going to go with someone more experienced, I know this," I still can't stop the feeling that I'm actually going to get it? That the Newport Preservation Society, which is looking for two people to inventory everything they have, will be like, "oh, hey, she could do all of the textiles and clothing, that would be so excellent." Yet at the same time I know I'm not even going to get an interview.

Hope is the greatest gift, I suppose.

I've learned so much about military badges and ribbons this week, it's crazy. I hope I use this information at some point, really.

Ooh, I could see an exhibition on the military uniforms and regalia. They have stuff from the Civil War to Vietnam. Other things I could see making exhibitions out of at the Chapman: the theme of Invention, with gadgets patented from the 1860s to 1920 or so, the "bread machine", the collapsible bicycling cup, etc.; underwear to the 1930s; dolls; bottles, from milk bottles used by local dairies to patent medicine bottles; beaded purses and/or accessories in general; cleaning/maintenance tools ...

I feel like the proper thing to say is "why didn't anyone tell me Slings & Arrows was so good?!" but the thing is I've seen people talking about how good it is for ages and it just took me this long to get around to watching it. Um. It is actually fantastic. Owen went to stay with his gf in Minisink this weekend and Dad is at a wedding with Melissa, so I stayed up to 12:30 last night watching it and now I'm watching more this morning. "Richard, you sound like a Nazi."

ETA: I'm thinking of trying Birchbox for a few months. Pro: get pushed to try new cosmetic whatsits, get to try nicer ones, samples get used up and are easy to get rid of if I don't like them, presents in the mail. Con: $10 a month, already have expenses, could get more for cheaper at CVS. Hm. Might give it a go for a month.

I wrote a bit more about my last topic on DW, if you're interested.

I'm starting to feel more like I belong in the Dance Museum, mainly because they've stopped being like, "give us your expert opinion please," and started being more, "can you just do this?" That sounds bad but I'm much more comfortable with this. It's just easier, because when they're asking me for my expert opinion they're still not really giving me any power, and if I'm not going to have the power to actually change things I'd rather just be useful.

Tomorrow I'm going to Bennington to look at a few historic houses I plan to send resumes to.

Oh well. I did find like a million more paintings of neoclassical dress to look at.
chocolatepot: Ed and Stede ([dovecote] thinking)
Yesterday I tried ballet costumes on a dress form at the museum to see if that would be a good size for them to order. Nope, it's not. I think the form was a 4, and the majority of the costumes were probably 2s, with a few 0s. I was so tired last night that I fell asleep almost as soon as I got into bed. It's surprisingly hard work! But the dress form was fairly tall, the top of the neck was above my head, and some of the costumes were amazingly heavy. Really, the only ones that fit were the ones from Pillar of Fire, probably because they're the newest and I think ballet dancers are a little less thin these days. You can see the three costumes I dressed in the picture below:

They didn't fit quite as well as in the picture, though. I also sewed a spangle and another thing back on with my horrible Skala synthetic-hair-silk impossible-to-see thread.

Wow, I got my laundry in from the line just in time! But of course it's not an exciting sort of a storm, even though the radar shows a ton of red and yellow. :( It just rained a bit.

Otherblog stuff since I last posted - court dress, some pictures from the Gallery of Fashion, thinking about how to work petticoats, more stuff from the Gallery of Fashion, some paintings, the mantua, and more on a couple of paintings.
