Well, this has been a very satisfying day, because I've (basically) finished my generic Victorian corset (read: not actually quite right for any part of the Victorian era, but produces a suitable hourglass silhouette), and while I only get a couple of inches of reduction, a) that is literally more reduction than I have ever before achieved, and b) despite the fact that that's not too much reduction, because of the shaping and the round-waist effect, I get a really good figure. It's not perfect (my bust is already wide-set and the corset makes it even more so, there's weird flaring at the bottom of the front pieces, the top edge is a bit low), but it will do me for a while and provide a great starting point for when I replace it.

And now to bed, quite early for a Friday night, but I'm tired and not good at sleeping in.

Welp, I just spent about an hour rewriting the tight lacing will kill you in horrible ways wiki page. It was pretty pathetic. Whoever did it up before cited one or two Victorian doctors for all the dire conditions caused by corsets, then "backed it up" with modern sources that said things like "severe constipation may cause death" or "blockage of this particular artery can cause liver failure" to prove that corsets kill. I'm still not sure if it was a deliberate attempt to make it look like modern scientists have proved that right (who would give that much of a fuck in that direction?), but I responded to them with VALERIE STEELE DISAGREES.

Yes!

For once, a corset is going generally right! The hip panels aren't right yet, I had the same problem the time I made this crappily for my Emma costume, but they need to be cut down rather than made bigger, so: A+. I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of this whole sewing gig. I'm capable! I'm somewhat competent!

I don't know why the hip panels are so freakishly large, though. I suspect I did the percentage method at the wrong level and made them flare out too much. Fortunately I never flat-felled that seam, so I can take them out and cut them down easily.
