My god, people, it's just alternate character interpretations, UNCLENCH. Honestly, I have never seen a fandom more hostile to for-the-sake-of-it ACIs and fun revisionism.

The first four of these rules for romance writing manage to nicely encapsulate why I don't really like romance novels anymore. I mean, look, it basically says "give your heroine and hero the same personalities and circumstances as all other heroines and heroes".

Awesome new blog I've discovered, by Beatrice Behlen from the Museum of London.

I keep forgetting to do this meme. From [personal profile] shaggydogstail:

-Comment with "Winter is Coming"
-I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
-Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
-Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

1. What is your favourite recipe?
I think I would have to say the Butter Chicken from my Indian cookbook ... but I can't remember the title or the authors and it's not here with me. But it's creamy and delicious and if it didn't involve so much butter and cream I'd make it more often.

2. Top five book quotes.
1) "I can no longer listen in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope." - Persuasion

2) "If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." - Goblet of Fire

3) I have to make the admission that I'm really bad at remembering lines.

3. What is your worst habit?
Picking. I get hormonal and stress acne and I can't stop messing with it (which always makes me more stressed). It sucks big time.

4. Tell us a joke.
This is the funniest Tumblr I have ever seen, which I determine counts.

5. You've run away to join the circus! What's your act?
They don't let me out in public, I stick sequins on the trapeze artists' leotards.

Meme!

From [personal profile] dancesontrains: Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I would be interested to hear you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

1. What inspired your love of historical costuming?

I always want to have some kind of cool/cute story to explain it, but I can't actually remember. What I do remember is being in third grade and having to do an oral presentation on anything at all, and choosing to present about what kind of underwear fashionable women wore in the 18th century. Because my mom is awesome and creative, I used a book that showed a woman at various steps of getting dressed and made a poster of her where you could flip up the skirt and see her panniers and petticoats. Which inspired me to use a sketchbook to draw women in structural historic underwear on one side of a page and then in a dress on the other, so you could hold it up to the light and see both at the same time. I was a weird kid.

2. Do you recall your first fandom(s)?

It was either Harry Potter or the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Dealing with Dragons, etc.) I think what happened was that HP came around at the same time my family Got The Internet and it prompted me to search for HP stuff, which led me to the existence of fic, which led me to write for EFC - I think HP was kind of daunting to me at the time.

3. Have you ever written fic or drawn fanart?

I don't think I've ever drawn fanart, but I was really into fic for a while. (Here's my dreadful old FFN account.) The first one I ever wrote was a next-gen little adventure for Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

4. Favourite sweets?

Robin's Eggs and Cadbury Cream Eggs! I got a 42oz bag of the former after Easter, yaaaaaay, but unfortunately the only Cadbury egg I got this year was a year old, from my mom's cupboard, and I didn't finish it because it was hideous.

5. What would your dream career consist of?

Traveling around the country (the world?) taking patterns from extant clothes and publishing them in collections by museum (ie "Titley Title: Patterns from Museum X"). More realistically, ending up as some kind of textile/clothing/suchlike specialist consulting at a large range of museums doing basically what I've done in this internship but being paid for it.

6. Who's the lady in your default LJ icon?

Edna St. Vincent Millay! I am not really much of a one for poetry in general, but I do like hers. Also, the picture looks to be from the 1910s, and era I love.

7. What questions do you wish someone would ask you?

Hm. Hm. I don't know? All that's coming up is really specific things like "what is your favorite type of 18th century dress?" or "what are some of the ugliest extant clothes you've seen?" or "what is it about the 1910s that make them the best decade?"
